What factors should I consider when buying a second hand horse trailer?
Check the bodywork thoroughly for rust. Ensure floorboards and partitions are in good condition. Inspect the tires and ramp for any wear or damage.
Where should I buy a second hand trailer from?
You should buy your trailer from a reputable trailer dealer. If in doubt, check the company reviews!
What do I do if my car has a 7 pin plug for the electrics but the trailer has a 13 pin plug?
We can provide you with an adapter for the electrics. You can then test the electrics on your car to ensure the lighting works correctly.
First Time Buyers
What license do I need to tow a trailer?
You can tow many smaller trailers on a regular car driver’s license.
How do I tow a horse trailer?
Your horse trailer might be wider than your towing vehicle, so take care positioning yourself on the road. Additionally, the extra weight means it takes longer to accelerate and brake. You must also make sure you’re covered with horse trailer cover in case of any accidents.
What factors should I consider when buying a new trailer?
How many horses will you be transporting?
Single and double trailers are practical options for most people, however, larger trailers are available.
What size horses will you be travelling?
Ensure the standing area is not too big or too small for the horse to provide comfort to the horse when travelling.
What vehicle will you be using to tow your trailer?
You need to consider the maximum authorised mass (MAM), or loaded weight, of the trailer. 4x4 or a car with four wheel drive are usually best for towing trailers.
What type of trips will you be taking?
The longer the journey, the more important it is that you ensure your horses travel comfortably in a trailer with good ventilation and suspension.
Do I need to carry my horse's passport when travelling?
Yes, you must travel your horse with their passport.
Can you get breakdown and roadside assistance with a horse trailer?
Yes, it can be obtained through Equine Rescue Services and it is free with any new trailer purchased from West House trailers.

How often should I get my horse trailer serviced?
We recommend that you get your trailer serviced once every 12 months.
Do you provide servicing?
Yes, we have experienced and knowledgeable mechanics who can provide servicing on all makes of trailers including Cheval Liberte, Ifor Williams, and Equi-Trek. Learn more >
What does a service on my trailer include?
We have a 26 point check of the complete trailer including brakes, electrics and tyres.
Does my trailer have to be clean before a service?
No, we offer a free external wash of the trailer included in the service and an internal wash of the trailer can be purchased.

Box Trailers
What factors should I consider when buying a box trailer?
Payload capacity
Can it carry the weight of goods you require it to.
Tie down points

Do the trailers come with warranty?
Yes, all new box trailers come with 2 years manufacturers warranty.
What weight will the ramp hold?
The ramp will hold ½ a ton but you can purchase a reinforcement kit.

Can I have mesh sides on my tipping trailer?
Yes
What is the tipping trailer's maximum extension?
Our hydraulic tipping trailers have a tipping angle of approximately 45 degrees.
How is the battery charged to enable tipping?
The battery is charged by a battery charger.
How many tips do you get off one charge of the battery?
You get 50 tips off one charge of the battery.
Does a tipping trailer come with ramps?
Yes, you can purchase ramps as an additional extra.
