Choosing The Right Trailer For You

Choosing The Right Trailer For You

At West House trailers we supply many different makes, models and types of trailers – but which one do you need?

Horse trailers are obviously designed for horses, but what about the box trailers, and tipper trailers and enclosed trailers because they all have more than one use!

There are multiple things to consider when looking at trailers, including:

  • What vehicle are you using to tow with

  • What are you using the trailer for

  • What is the weight of the cargo

  • What is your budget for the trailers

Firstly, what vehicle are you using to tow the trailer. There is no point looking at 3 ton trailers if your car can only tow 1 ton – and there is the legal side of weight of towing too. To figure out what you’re allowed to tow you’ll need to know the weight of both the vehicle and trailer - also known as the ‘maximum authorised mass’ (MAM).

If you got your licence before 1 January 1997 you can usually drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of up to 8,250kg MAM. If you got your licence from 1 January 1997 you can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM. This is known as a ‘category BE’ vehicle.

The tow vehicle must also be able to pull the weight (i.e. you need a strong / powerful engine). For towing full size trailers such as flatbed car trailers and enclosed car trailers many people prefer to use SUVs or pick-up trucks as they are heavy and powerful with lots of torque which is needed for towing.

Next, What are you using the trailer for? It would be a waste to buy a huge box trailer for 2 surfboards or a bicycle when a small trailer would do the job.  On the other hand, if you run a moving company and need to transport a whole homes worth of items at the same time, a small box trailer just wouldn’t be big enough! This also applies to car trailer or horse trailers too. (You can’t transport a horse on a car trailer!)

To help you find the perfect trailer for all your cargo Debon supply a whole range of box trailers from the small but mighty C220 to the giant C2000 (which can also be used for cars!!). Here at West House Trailers we have many Debon Box trailers in stock at our yard in Bishopton, Durham!

This was touched on slightly earlier in the blog, however, you need to think about the weight of your cargo too, not only for the legal towing MAM, but for the maximum gross weight of your trailer. In a very general sense, there are two types of trailers – braked and unbraked. A braked trailer can carry more weight than an unbraked trailer because it can stop on its own (your car doesn’t provide all of the stopping power for a trailer!). An overweight trailer on the roads can cause serious problems as it become difficult to stop, unstable and very unsafe. It also causes legal problems as the law prohibits you from overloading your trailer.

Finally, one of the most important factors when buying a trailer is your budget. As trailers get larger, they also tend to cost more too, so this needs to be taken into consideration.

However, West House Trailers can help with this as our flexible financing options are quick and easy! It is easy to apply as we have partnered with Buyline to help you, if you are in our showroom or on the phone, just let us know you are considering our finance packages, and we can talk you through the options.

You can complete an application here in the showroom or even at home at your convenience. The quick application form takes no more than a few minutes to complete, and you’ll receive an instant decision.

West House Trailers also offer trailers for hire! If you need a trailer for just a day, a weekend or even multiple months our flexible hire options are designed to work around you!
